Area Profile:

Grimes County is a relatively unspoiled region in the eastern half of Texas. This was the choice farmland hand-picked by Stephen F. Austin, founder of the Austin Colony, so it is steeped in Republic of Texas and cotton plantation heritage. Before that it was the preferred hunting ground for Native American buffalo hunters. This region first made history as the crossroads of European explorers, the last trail for La Salle, the world famous Frenchman who established France’s claim to the Midwest. The Spaniards passed through here in search of him, establishing the famous "La Bahia Trail" and claimed this region for Spain. Indian tribes, various kings, explorers and the Father of Texas have all once had their eyes on this ancient prize of Texas.

It is a "75 miles northwest of Houston, the Nation’s fourth largest city, and positioned between Conroe and nearby Bryan-College Station, nearby Navasota has a booming population of approximately 7,500. Visitors are quickly charmed by the historic structures in the Victorian downtown and surrounding neighborhoods, that could easily be the background for a Norman Rockwell illustration. Our schools boast of campuses rated with Recognized status among Texas schools. A place known for history and natural beauty, numerous artists and writers have instinctively chosen to make this area their home.
